Found a rare photocard, a signed album, or a collectible on Bunjang (번개장터) and can’t work out how to buy it as a foreigner? This is the thing that trips up most people on Korean secondhand apps. One question tells you if you can do it on your own: can you get your item through Bunjang Global, or does it live only on the local Korean app?
What stops you
You can use local Bunjang as a foreigner only if Korea can confirm your real ID. The official FAQ says foreign nationals may join when “외국인 등록증이 발급되어 본인인증이 가능한” (you have an ARC and Korea can check your ID). Signup runs through “본인인증(휴대폰, 토스),” so you confirm your ID with a Korean phone line or Toss.
Two groups get stuck. Tourists have no ARC and no Korean-readable phone line, so they can’t even start. Residents often have an ARC but still hit errors (인증정보 불일치 / auth mismatch, 외국인 인증 불가 / foreign check failed, or 외국인등록번호 오류) because the carriers don’t read passport data or your name doesn’t match exactly. On top of that, the whole app and every seller chat is in Korean only.
Can you do it on your own?
Try Bunjang Global first. It adds English search and buys items for you (shipping handled via Delivered Korea), and for many listed items it’s enough. Don’t let anyone tell you it’s impossible.
But be clear about what Global is, because no one else says it plainly: it is not the local account. Global’s Terms keep Korean Bunjang for Korea residents, and Global only gives you translated listings plus buy-for-me links, not direct buying, payment, or seller chat. So Global won’t help when:
- the item is local-only and never shows up in Global’s catalogue;
- you need to talk down the price or check the condition with the seller, or send it to an address abroad;
- you want the item during a short Korea trip, not through a slow buy-and-ship-later flow.
One detail older guides miss: since August 2024, local Bunjang runs on card-based 안전결제 (safe-payment) and cash deals are gone. Safe-payment still needs a verified local account, so the ID check, not the card, is what stops you.
When you can’t do it on your own
Get someone to do it for you (a Korean friend you trust, or Toyoni) when:
- the listing is only on the Korean app and you can’t get it through Bunjang Global;
- your own ID check won’t pass (no ARC, or a resident whose Toss, name, or phone check keeps failing);
- you need to chat with the seller in Korean to talk down the price, confirm the condition, or send it abroad;
- you’re tempted by a 代切/account-rental offer (Chinese buyers on Xiaohongshu warn that renting accounts gets people scammed).
How Toyoni helps
We do your Bunjang buying for you. We find and check the listing, message the Korean seller in Korean when you need to talk down the price or confirm the condition, and buy on a verified local Bunjang account through safe-payment (or tell you when Bunjang Global already covers your item and you don’t need us). Then we get the delivery here and forward or hand it to you, with proof.
This is the safe way, not the grey-market account rentals fans get warned about: a real verified purchase on a real account, not a rented one. If you’ve also been looking at Karrot, the same problem and the same choice apply there.
